Harvey Grill is a Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience and Director of Integrative Programs for the Institute of Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism at the University of Pennsylvania.  His research focuses on identifying the neural circuits, neurochemicals, and intracellular signals that control energy balance. Grill's work emphasizes a number of different themes including [1] the importance of caudal brainstem neuronal processing of vagal-transmitted gastrointestinal (GI) signals, and local leptin and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor signaling to food intake inhibition and [2] the contribution of NTS neural processing to food motivation, food reward and environmental associations guiding feeding achieved via rostral projections to neurons in a variety of nuclei in midbrain, diencephalon and telencephalon. Professor Grill has been an invited speaker at many international and national conferences. He has authored over 140 papers, served on NIH Study Sections, as chair of the Program Committee and president of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior, and is the current president of the Obesity Society. Grill has a successful record of mentoring having trained pre-and postdoctoral fellows including: Drs. Kent Berridge, Gary Schwartz, Paul Breslin, Randy Seeley, Diana Williams, Karolina Skibicka,  John-Paul Baird, Joel Kaplan, Bill Flynn, Alan Spector, Matthew Hayes and Scott Kanoski. These trainees are well regarded by their peers and have achieved a significant degree of success with respect to their record of publication and funding.
